Flo Rida-I Cry

Weekly Chart Notes: Brenda Russell Talks Flo Rida's 'I Cry'

What does the smooth R&B singer think of the Sunshine State rapper's reworking of her 1988 hit ballad 'Piano in the Dark'?
Rapper Flo Rida performs onstage during the 2012 Teen Choice Awards at Gibson Amphitheatre on July 22, 2012 in Universal City, California.
Brenda Russell's "Piano in the Dark" now plays in a club.

Rapper Flo Rida has turned her sultry ballad, which rose to No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1988, into the dance floor-ready "I Cry." The new interpretation bows this week at No. 81 on the Hot 100, returning the song's hook to the chart after a 24-year hiatus. (It also debuts on Rap Songs at No. 25 and Pop Songs at No. 36.)

Cry" actually samples a sample: Dutch duo Bingo Players first reworked "Piano" as "Cry (Just a Little)," which reached No. 15 on Dance/Mix Show Airplay in March.

Russell, who first arrived on the Hot 100 in 1979 with the No. 30 hit "So Good, So Right," co-wrote "Piano" with Jeff Hull and Scott Cutler, the latter of whom co-penned Natalie Imbruglia's 1998 smash "Torn," among other melodic hits. "Piano" was nominated for three Grammy Awards, including song of the year, in 1989.

What does Russell think of the transformation of "Piano" into two dance hits this year?

"It's pretty cool that artists like Flo Rida and Bingo Players can be inspired to interpret a song like 'Piano in the Dark' in completely new genres," she tells Chart Beat. "As an artist and writer, it's the highest compliment we can be paid.

"I never imagined 'Piano' as a dance hit (but) I'm thrilled that it's reaching a new generation of audiences."
Following radio's playing of "Piano," Russell added the top 15 Adult Contemporary and top 40 R&B/Hip-Hop Songs hit "Stop Running Away" in 1990. The following year, the title cut from her 1988 album "Get Here" wound up climbing even higher on the Hot 100 (No. 5) than "Piano" - as recorded by Oleta Adams. Russell's original version had reached No. 37 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs in 1988, but Adams' cover took hold as an anthem for loved ones at home missing those at battle in the Gulf War.

"'Get Here' was a song I tried not to write because my record company [A&M] wanted a dance hit from me," Russell remembers. "When it wouldn't go away, I wrote it out to clear my palate.

"I was living in Stockholm, Sweden at the time. Ironically, when Oleta Adams heard my version of the song for the first time, she was in a Stockholm record shop!"

(The pair subsequently teamed in the studio, releasing the gospel-tinged ballad "We Will Find a Way" in 1994.) Russell's latest effort is the star-studded song "L.O.V.E. (Let One Voice Emerge)," which she co-wrote with Patti Austin, Siedah Garrett and Mervyn Warren. Sharing vocals are Fergie, Keke Palmer, Sheila E, Judith Hill, Lalah Hathaway, and Jenna Ushkowitz, aka, Tina Cohen-Chang of Fox TV's "Glee," as well as Russell, Austin and Garrett.

The song (available on iTunes) accompanies a non-partisan campaign to reach out to the largest group of non-voters in America - nearly 20 million unmarried women - and support the Voter Participation Center, which has identified unmarried women as a crucial, yet unrecognized, constituency, and its partners. "The message is simple: Get registered and get to the polls on Nov. 6, "says VPC president Page Gardner.

The video for "L.O.V.E." has garnered 110,000 YouTube views since its posting just less than two weeks ago.

As Russell enjoys a new generation of fans appreciating her work, thanks to Flo Rida, she's likewise energized by making a difference via her new recording.

"Dr. Maya Angelou, among others, has spoken eloquently in support of 'L.O.V.E.'," Russell says.

"I am inspired by this project".

Austin City Limits 2012: Chili Peppers 'Mess With Texas,' Avett Bros Rock Sunday

AUSTIN, TX - OCTOBER 14: Scott Avett of Avett Brothers performs during the 2012 Austin City Limits Music Festival on October 14, 2012 in Austin, Texas. (Photo by C Flanigan/Getty Images)
weekend of mud, sweat and beer came to a close Sunday with a nearly two-hour headlining set by the Red Hot Chili Peppers at Austin City Limits 2012.

"We came here specifically to mess with Texas," frontman Anthony Kiedis told the Austin crowd after kicking off the final set of the festival with "Monarchy of Roses." And they did just that as the crowd danced and sang along with "Can't Stop," "Dani California," "Suck My Kiss," "Otherside," "Under the Bridge," "Snow (Hey Oh)," "Californication" and "By The Way."
Crystal Castles, Childish Gambino Feed Off Chili Peppers Crowd
Electronic band Crystal Castles started their set 20 minutes late but made up for it with blinding strobe lights, a tummy rumbling bass and a bit of crowd surfing. Despite the mad beats, many audience members left early to wade through the crowd eagerly awaiting the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the Bud Light stage.

Actor and rapper Childish Gambino's (a.k.a Donald Glover, Troy Barnes on NBC's "Community") crowd stuck around longer partly because of his performances of "Heartbeat "and "You See Me" and partly because the Chili Peppers were headlining at the neighboring stage.

Mud, Bras and Jellyfish
On the fan front, the final day of ACL 2012 saw most people covered in mud thanks to the previous day's rain. Despite forecasts calling for more precipitation, there was hardly a cloud in the sky. Once again, flags out-shined fashion choices, as one group carried around an umbrella jellyfish that read "R U Jelly?" while another made a flag out of six lacy bras.

Avett Brothers Perform With the Chili Peppers' Chad Smith, Stooges Invite Fans Onstage
North Carolina folk rock band the Avett Brothers rocked the AMD stage with "January Wedding," "February Seven" and a performance of "Paul Newman vs. The Demons" featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.

At the same time, Iggy and the Stooges owned the Bud Light stage across the park with "Raw Power" and "I Feel Alright (1970)." "I'm lonely…. Bum rush this f***ing stage," Iggy Pop told onlookers before a group of about 20 fans stormed the stage during "Shake Appeal."

PSY Still Stuck At No. 2 as Maroon 5 Tops Hot 100

"One More Night" spends a fifth week in the top spot, while Ke$ha crashes the Top 10.
Maroon 5, PSY

Maroon 5 once again puts the reins on PSY's attempt to finish first on the Billboard Hot 100.

While the Korean rapper has promised to perform 'Gangnam Style' "topless in a place where everyone can watch" should the song top the tally, Maroon 5 again prevents such bare-chested cheer, as "One More Night" spends a fifth week at No. 1. PSY's song, aided by its viral video in which he shows off his horse-like moves, holds at No. 2 for a fourth frame.

fewer than 700 overall chart points. This week, approximately 2,000 points separate the songs, as "Night" gains by 1% in overall points and "Style" declines by 3%.
Style" gains slightly more in audience this week than "Night" (6.7 million vs. 6.4 million, according to Nielsen BDS), but the latter song remains atop the Hot 100 largely thanks to its wide lead in radio airplay. "Night" logs a second week at No. 1 on the Radio Songs chart (in its 12th week on the ranking) with a 5% increase to 131 million all-format audience impressions.

The younger "Style" (five weeks on Radio Songs) surges by 12% to 63 million, roaring 16-12 on Radio Songs. On the mainstream top 40-based Pop Songs radio airplay chart, "Style" jumps 13-10 in its fifth week, marking the fastest ascent to the top 10 for a male artist's debut hit since Jay Sean's "Down" (featuring Lil Wayne) also flew to the top tier in five frames in 2009.

The more than two-to-one radio advantage of "Night" is enough to keep it at No. 1 on the Hot 100 despite "Style" leading in streaming and sales. On On-Demand Songs, "Style" tallies a second week on top, although with a 4% downturn to 981,000 on-demand streams, according to BDS. "Night" narrows the streaming lead of "Style," rebounding 4-3 on On-Demand Songs with a smaller decrease (down 2%) to 799,000.

On the Digital Songs chart, "Night" likewise slices into the lead of "Style." "Style" rebounds 4-2 with a 10% decline to 231,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and "Night" reverses course (5-4) with a 4% decline to 160,000. With its latest sales frame, "Night" passes 2 million downloads sold to date. At five weeks on top, it's also Maroon 5's longest Hot 100 reign, besting the four-week command of "Moves Like Jagger" (featuring Christina Aguilera) last year.

Below the race to the Hot 100's winner's circle, Taylor Swift makes a top 10 entrance for a third straight week with a preview track from her fourth album, "Red," due Oct. 22, as "I Knew You Were Trouble" blasts in at No. 3. The song ties "Mine" (Aug. 21, 2010) for her second-highest launch, trailing only "Today Was a Fairytale," which began at No. 2 the week of Feb. 6, 2010.

"Trouble" begins atop Digital Songs with 416,000, Swift's second-best sales week; she sold more in a frame the week of Sept. 1 when "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" opened at No. 1 on Digital Songs (and rocketed 72-1 on the Hot 100) with 623,000, the best-ever sum for a song by a woman.

"Never" joins "Trouble" in the Hot 100's top five, holding at No. 5 (belowfun.'s "Some Nights," which maintains its No. 4 rank), granting Swift two titles in the top five simultaneously for the first time. In its 10th week on the Hot 100, "Never" debuts at last on On-Demand Songs (No. 23) following its first full week of streaming availability. (It was released to streaming services on Oct. 2.) The song registered 91% of its 457,000 on-demand streams via Spotify, with Cricket, Rdio, Rhapsody and Slacker also contributing to its total. "Never" spent three weeks atop the Hot 100 last month without the benefit of streaming points.

(Due to its pure pop, even dubstep-leaning, sound, "Trouble" does not appear on the newly-revamped Country Songs chart, which, as of last week, now blends airplay, sales and streaming data; it's also not being promoted to country radio. "Never" spends a second week atop the tally).

Justin Bieber's "As Long as You Love Me," featuring Big Sean, returns to its peak to date on the Hot 100 (7-6), followed by Alex Clare's "Too Close," which scores a new highpoint (10-7).

In its third week, Ke$ha's "Die Young" vaults into the Hot 100's top 10 (14-8) with across-the-board gains. The first single from her album "Warrior," due Dec. 4, bumps 7-5 on Digital Songs (139,000, up 1%) and 25-16 on Radio Songs (55 million, up 23%) and debuts on On-Demand Songs at No. 27 (436,000, up 81%). "Young" marks Ke$ha's eighth Hot 100 top 10 dating to her arrival with the nine-week No. 1 "TiK ToK" in 2010.

Ke$ha's 'Warrior': The Billboard Cover Story

When Ke$ha burst onto the scene in 2009 -- rapping through an Auto-Tune filter about brushing her teeth with whiskey and boys trying to "touch [her] junk" -- the then-22-year-old quickly positioned herself as pop's resident troublemaker and made the charts her home. In sales week that ended two days after Christmas of 2010, her bratty debut single, "TiK ToK," smashed the record for highest single-week sales for a female solo artist with 600,000 digital downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan (the previous record-holder, Lady Gaga's "Just Dance," sold 419,000 one year earlier), and soared to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Dr. Luke- and Benny Blanco-produced anthem took just 11 weeks to top the chart, holding the peak position for nine weeks on its way to becoming the longest-running No. 1 debut single by a female artist since 1977, and the highest-selling digital single of all time, second only to the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling," with almost 14 million copies sold.
Ke$ha's debut album, "Animal," crowned the Billboard 200 when it arrived at the top of 2010 with 152,000 copies in its first week, according to SoundScan. Driven by an attractive $6.99 initial price point, it leveraged the sales record of "TiK ToK" with iTunes' Complete My Album program and took full advantage of the holiday shopping season with a preorder program that launched Dec. 15, 2010. The result was another digital benchmark, this time for sales of a No. 1 album.
A series of top 10 hits, including "Your Love Is My Drug," "Take It Off" and "Blah Blah Blah" (featuring 3OH!3) followed, and in November 2011, Ke$ha once again shot to the top of the Hot 100 with "We R Who We R," the lead single from the EP "Cannibal," which was also included in the deluxe-edition repackage of "Animal." "We R Who We R" bowed at the peak position with more than 280,000 digital downloads. Ke$ha, who co-writes her own songs, was a hit factory, mining chart gold.

That is, until she took a break. After touring as the opening act on the North American leg of Rihanna's 2010 Last Girl on Earth tour (which grossed $13.1 million from 18 reported shows, according to Billboard Boxscore) and then headlining the Get $leazy tour last year (grossing $2.1 million from nine shows), the Nashville-raised singer went on a month-long sabbatical before taking on her sophomore LP, "Warrior" (RCA/Kemosabe). Now, with "Warrior" set for a Dec. 4 release and lead single "D ie Young" gaining at radio (it's the Greatest Gainer this week, despite falling 13-14 on the Hot 100), Ke$ha is back, much to RCA's relief.

"I had the label breathing down my neck to come back and make a new record, and I kind of had to tell everybody to fuck off for a month," says the singer/songwriter born Kesha Rose Sebert. When her solo tour wrapped in September 2011, Ke$ha dropped out of the public eye after Rio de Janeiro's Rock in Rio Festival, making stops in South Africa and other locales before returning to the States in late October. She calls it a "spiritual journey," a chance to get off the road and back to herself and the land: "I needed to get my head back on straight and sleep in the dirt for a little while. And then I came back and have literally been working on my record ever since."

After a 14-month break from the top 40, Ke$ha returned to the upper reaches of the charts with the release of "Die Young" on Sept. 25. RCA chose WHTZ (Z100) New York to debut the track as part of Clear Channel's iHeartRadio World Premiere program on the "Elvis Duran and the Morning Show," which reaches 7 million listeners in 50-plus markets each morning. For the first day, it played the song every hour. The response was so strong that Z100 moved the cut to its "power new" category, playing the song every other hour to give it maximum exposure.

Bruno Mars Gets 'Locked Out of Heaven' in New Video: Watch

Bruno Mars
The new music video for Bruno Mars' "Locked Out Of Heaven" (released today, Oct 15) shows just how much of a party his single can be.
The video has a pretension-free vibe to it, as per everything Bruno Mars. Wearing just a t-shirt and chains, the singer rocks out with his band (who are decidedly styled down as well) to his newest tune. The venue and the audience look small and intimate; one gets the feeling that Mars isn't so much playing a concert, as he jumped on stage at a party with friends and they all just went nuts.

When not working up a sweat, the pop crooner is just being an everyday man, horsing around with friends, rolling dice in the alley and taking swigs of his Jack Daniels.
Everything about "Locked Out Of Heaven" -- whether it be the video or the track itself - is retro. While the song references the early discography ofthe Police, the video takes us back a little bit further. From the style of their dress and the wonky-TV effects on the video, one might guess that Bruno and his friends are partying in the '70s. Only the Akai MPC sampler being played by a band member reminds the viewer that this video is, in fact, modern.

"Locked Out Of Heaven" previews Mars' sophomore set, "Unorthodox Jukebox," due Dec. 11 via Atlantic. The Mark Ronson and The Smeezingtons (Mars' production group)-produced single premiered on October 1. This week, the song debuts on the Hot 100 at number 34.

Coincidentally, Christina Aguilera's new single "Your Body" (off the upcoming "Lotus") debuted at the same spot, only to drop to number 64 in its following week. Hopefully the same fate is not in store for Bruno Mars' latest.

Lee's Life of Pi is inspiring 3-D art

David Germain
Life of Pi is one of those lyrical, internalized novels that should have no business working on the screen. Quite possibly, it wouldn't have worked if anyone but Ang Lee had adapted it.

The filmmaker who turned martial arts into a poetic blockbuster for Western audiences with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and made gay cowboys mainstream fare with Brokeback Mountain has crafted one of the finest entries in his eclectic resume in Life of Pi, a gorgeous, ruminative film that is soulfully, provocatively entertaining.
Lee combines a lifetime of storytelling finesse with arguably the most artful use of digital 3-D technology yet seen to bring to life Yann Martel's saga of an Indian youth lost at sea with a ravenous Bengal tiger aboard his small lifeboat. It's a delicate narrative with visceral impact, told with an innovative style that's beguiling to watch and a philosophical voice that compassionately explores how and why we tell stories.
Our playful, not-always-reliable narrator here is Pi Patel, played by newcomer Suraj Sharma as a teen and as a grown man reflecting back on his adventure by Irrfan Khan. As a youth, Pi, his parents and brother set out from India, where the family runs a zoo in a botanical garden, to Canada. Pi's father brings along some of his menagerie on their voyage, including a tiger named Richard Parker with which Pi had a terrifying encounter as a boy.

Their ship sinks in a storm, with Pi the only human survivor aboard a lifeboat with an orangutan, a hyena, a zebra with a broken leg and Richard Parker. Survival of the fittest thins their numbers into a life-and-death duel, and eventually an uneasy truce of companionship, between Richard Parker and Pi.
This could be a one-note story — please Mister Tiger, don't eat me. Yet Lee and screenwriter David Magee find rich and clever ways to translate even Pi's stillest moments, the film unfolding through intricate flashbacks, whimsical voice-overs, harrowing sea hazards and exquisite flashes of fantasy and hallucination.

Lee used real tigers for a handful of scenes, but Richard Parker mostly is a digital creation, a remarkably realistic piece of computer animation seamlessly blended into the live action. The digital detail may be responsible for most of Richard Parker's fearful presence, though no small part of the tiger's impact is due to the nimble engagement of Sharma with a predator that wasn't actually there during production, a task hard enough for experienced performers, let alone a youth with no acting experience.
Digital 3-D usually is an unnecessary distraction not worth the extra admission price. In Life of Pi, like Martin Scorsese's Hugo, the 3-D images are tantalizing and immersive, pulling viewers deeper into Pi's world so that the illusion of depth becomes essential to the story.

Not all of the images live up to Lee's digital tiger or 3-D wizardry. Water is notoriously hard to simulate through computer animation, and the waves crashing down around the sinking ship or tossing Pi's lifeboat about have an unfinished, cartoony look. Still, Lee more than compensates with a world of visual wonders, from the simple image of a swimmer framed from below as though he's stroking his way across the sky to a mysterious island populated by a seemingly infinite number of meerkats.
The rest of the cast is mostly inconsequential, including Gerard Depardieu in a fleeting role as a cruel ship's cook. The other people in Pi's life are filtered through this unusual youth's eyes, each of them catalysts in the development of his deep spirituality, which blends Hinduism, Christianity, Islam and other contradictory influences into a weirdly cohesive form of humanism.
Like Martel's novel, the film disdains our inclination to anthropomorphize wild animals by ascribing human traits to them, and then turns around and subtly does just that. Friendship cannot possibly exist between a hungry tiger and a scrawny kid alone on the open water, yet for that boy, if not the cat, the need for togetherness, some commune of spirits, is almost as strong as the need for food and water. The ways in which Lee examines the strange bond between Pi and Richard Parker are wondrous, hilarious, unnerving, sometimes joyous, often melancholy.
Pi's story may not, as one character states, make you believe in God. But you may leave the theater more open to the possibilities of higher things in the life of Pi, and in your own. Life of Pi, a 20th Century Fox release, is rated PG for emotional thematic content throughout, and some scary action sequences and peril.

Leading the list is 'wild child' Miley Cyrus. She went from her long locks to super rock chic with this short peroxide blonde hairdo. And this is hands down, the most in-yer-face look of 2012.

They may not have been huge commercial success, but most of them have been able to recover their cost of production and some a small profit. These films were made on a shoe-string budget and reached across thanks to digital filmmaking.
The cost of filmmaking has come down to one third that of traditional filmmaking by using digital cameras and doing post-production in digital studios. And today 90% of screening in Cinema theatres in Tamil Nadu is through digital system, which has also ensured theatrical release for some of these films.
And the boom in multiplexes in the urban markets of TN, the famous 3C`s –Chennai, Chengalpet & Coimbatore has also helped. The 3C`s garner around 30- 35 % of total theatrical net in the state.
The urban audiences played a major role in the transformation of Tamil cinema, mainly due to social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. Today reviews on social networking sites appear within minutes of a film`s release. They are taken more seriously than print reviews.
These small films made on a budget of Rs 1.25 to Rs 1.75 Crore made mostly by debutants with newcomers in the lead. The success of these films show that Tamil Nadu audiences are looking at something different and content is king.

Though Aamir's suspense thriller Talaash opened to mixed response, his Midas touch helped the film earn profits at the box-office, both in India and in the overseas market. The critics felt that the script wasn’t impressive, but Aamir's portrayal of a policeman trying to solve a murder case while mourning his 11-year-old son's death impressed his fans.

Critics felt that Shah Rukh has outgrown lover boy roles. In Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Yash Chopra's last directorial venture, more than his romantic avatar, people loved him as an army man. The film opened to mixed response despite the huge buzz around SRK's pairing with Katrina Kaif for the first time.

After playing positive roles and doing comedies, Sanjay revived Bollywood's larger than life villain with his role as Kancha Cheena in Agneepath remake.
