Two of the biggest female artists in music will compete for Best Original Song at the Golden Globes next year, with Adele's Bond track "Skyfall" squaring off against Taylor Swift's "Safe & Sound," from "The Hunger Games."
Other nominees announced Thursday morning for the gala event held on Jan. 13 include Jon Bon Jovi's "Not Running Anymore," from "Stand Up Guys," the Keith Urban co-penned "For You," from "Act of Valor," and "Suddenly" from "Les Misérables."
Oscars Eligible List: 75 Songs -- Adele, Arcade Fire, Jon Bon Jovi
Adele released "Skyfall," co-written with Paul Epworth, on October 5 to much fanfare and it became the singer's first single to debut in the Top 10 on the Hot 100, peaking at No. 8. It has sold over 1.9 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
"Safe & Sound," Swift's breathy ballad featuring (and co-written by) Joy Williams and John Paul White of The Civil Wars, as well as T-Bone Burnett, peaked at No. 30 on the Hot 100 and has sold 1.4 million copies -- and last week was nominated for two Grammys, including Best Country Duo/Group Performance.
Bon Jovi, who won this very award in 1991 for "Blaze of Glory," has found himself back in the movie business after a lengthy break. "Stand Up Guys," an upcoming film starring Al Pacino and Christopher Walken playing former gangsters, includes two songs by Bon Jovi (the other being "Old Habits Die Hard").
"If you count the demos," he told Billboard last month. "I recorded these songs four times."
Urban co-wrote the military themed "For You" with frequent collaborator Monty Powell. It peaked at No. 6 on the Country Songs chart and has sold 445,000 copies in the U.S., according to SoundScan.
"Suddenly," from the upcoming musical "Les Misérables," was written by Claude-Michel Schönberg (music) and Herbert Kretzmer (lyrics). "Les Mis" has a total of four nominations, including Best Motion Picture, Comedy, Best Actor, for Hugh Jackman, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role, for Anne Hathaway.
The award for Best Score pits "Life of Pi" (Mychael Danna), "Argo" (Alexandre Desplat), "Anna Karenina" (Dario Marianelli), "Cloud Atlas" (Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek, Reinhold Heil), and "Lincoln" (John Williams).
Over in television, the new ABC hit "Nashville" will have two of its female stars competing in acting categories. Hayden Panettiere has been nominated for Supporting Actress in a series, while Connie Britton scored her first Globe nomination -- amazingly given her stellar work on "Friday Night Lights" -- for Best Actress in a drama.
