Regional Mexican singer Jenni Rivera, who died in a plane crash along with six others in Mexico on Dec. 9, will be seen in her first and only feature film in early 2013, according to actor Edward James Olmos.
Reached by phone, the Oscar-nominated actor said he was in disbelief that Rivera had died and added that he was looking forward to spending more time with the singer as the film's upcoming release was being planned for late April. The film is being distributed through Indomina Releasing.
"News of the plane crash tore my heart out," Olmos said. "Jenni was just an amazing force. From the very beginning I've said that she could garner an Academy Award for her work in 'Filly Brown.' She had a tough life, but she also had an extraordinary gift. She touched millions of people and she'll be missed."
In an earlier interview, Rivera said that she was proud of her work on the film which also stars Lou Diamond Phillips and newcomer Gina Rodriguez who plays the title role of an aspiring L.A. rapper while her drug-addicted mother, played by Rivera, is in prison.
"I had to dig deep for the role," Rivera said of her first try at acting. "I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. If I can make Edward James Olmos cry, to me that means it was a success."
For the film, Olmos recorded the song "Hurts So Bad" with Rivera, an oldies-themed composition. The soundtrack's producers, the L.A.-based Lisa "Khool-Aid" Rios and Edward "E-Dub" Rios, in earlier interviews said they were hoping to include the Olmos-Rivera duet on the final soundtrack.
